I have asthma. Will PowerLung help improve my lungs with this condition?
PowerLung is a fitness training machine designed to allow isolated training of the muscles used in breathing for both inhale and exhale. The muscles it is designed to train are: the diaphragm, the intercostals and the accessory muscles. PowerLung is a product designed to be used for exercise only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. There have been studies done on asthmatics using a similar protocol but for inhale only. In those studies, the treatment group experienced a reduction in the number and severity of their attacks. While PowerLung itself has not been specifically tested on asthmatics, many of our customers have advised us of similar results in their lives after using the PowerLung. You should always consult your personal physician.

Exercising increases respiration: Why do I need a "breathing workout?"
It is important for better total performance and enjoyment of activities to strengthen and train your breathing muscles independently of other muscle groups. During exercise, your breathing muscles respond to increased oxygen requirements and may become more aerobically conditioned, but exercise does not strength train them to give hem more strength, power, or endurance. Strength trained breathing muscles can help prevent or relieve respiratory muscle fatigue or maximization during exercise.

What is the difference in flow resistance training and threshold resistance training?
Flow resistance training is to repetitiously restrict the volume of air flow. It is an approach that was designed to exercise, but not strengthen breathing muscles. It is like breathing through a series of drinking straws that decrease in size. Many less expensive exercisers use this approach.
Isolated threshold resistance training, like weight training, is a work load program with incremental increases as the muscles strengthen. This is true training, not just conditioning, and is the only methods used by PowerLung.

Can you adjust the level of resistance for both inhaling and exhaling?
PowerLung is the only machine that has independently adjustable resistance-load cells designed for the user to set the resistance. Other lung muscle trainers concentrate on only inhaling or use an uncontrolled flow. Recent studies prove that isolated threshold resistance training for both inhaling and exhaling can improve the efficiency and power of your muscles.

-
How often should I increase the control dials?
Increase the load on either load cell (inhale or exhale) when breathing at the present setting is no longer demanding training.
Like any strength training program, when the exercise becomes easy, add more resistance (load). To increase the resistance, turn the control 1/8 of a turn, for either inhale or exhale. Remember, it will seldom be necessary to adjust inhale and exhale controls at the same time because they are independently adjustable.

How long should I continue the 3 x 10 x 2 Program?
You will begin to notice a difference in just a few days and measurable improvement in two weeks. However, when you quit training a muscle, it atrophies and weakens. As noted in the instructions, if you have reached a maximum training plateau, it may be time to begin a maintenance routine. To maintain the strength you have gained you must continue to train your breathing muscles.
